Venous insufficiency occurs when the valves in your veins fail, hindering blood from flowing properly to your heart. This causes a build-up of plasma in your legs and feet. The resultant pressure can trigger swelling, also known as edema. Typical symptoms of venous insufficiency and swelling include heavy legs, aching, cramping, varicose veins
